AB - The influence of growth regulator prohexadione-Ca (ProCa) concurrently with young canes removal on the modification of photosynthetic pigments content and antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, POD; catalase, CAT; polyphenol oxidase, PPO; superoxide dismutase, SOD) activities in leaves and fruits of raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) cultivar 'Willamette' was studied. ProCa increased while canes removal decreased chlorophylls and carotenoids content compared to control. POD, CAT, and PPO activities in leaves after removal of young canes were higher compared to control (2-4 times) which was visually confirmed for POD by isoelectrofocusing. Removal of young canes slithly increased, while ProCa significantly enhanced SOD activity in leaves compared to control (475.10 and 218.38 nkat mg(-1) prot, respectively). Pattern of SOD activity in fruit was similar as in leaf with substantial increase compared to control (about 15 times). Combination of implemented measures increased activity of all enzymes in the leaves and fruits. Our study could provide a better knowledge of the ProCa and canes removal influences on the action of enzymes in order to regulate their activities in fruit products.

AB - Bioclimatic air ionisation system (BI) works by neutralising air pollutants and microorganisms by means of oxidation with "activated oxygen". We investigated the effects of storage on changes in weight loss, chemical and sensory fruit properties in eight cultivars of strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). All cultivars were evaluated for their standard parameters of quality (soluble solids content, total acidity, vitamin C content, total antioxidant activity - TAC, total phenolic and anthocyanins content) at different store conditions: fresh fruits-control, cold stored (at 4 A degrees C) fruits without controlled atmospheres and cold stored (at 4 A degrees C) fruits in BI. The present study outlines that anthocyanins of the strawberries stored in BI were subjected to significant degradation. These strawberries have prolonged shelf-life accompanied by weight loss reduction, TAC increment, and sensory properties improvement in tested cultivars, retaining other nutritional fruit qualities.

AB - This study illustrates the differences in productivity and fruit quality attributes of two day-neutral strawberry cultivars ('Diamante' and 'Elsinore') throughout the growing season. Both cultivars were evaluated for their flowering and ripening time, yield components, as well as for biometrical fruit characteristics (fruit weight, index of fruit shape, and stalk length) and nutritional value (soluble solids content, titratable acidity and vitamin C content). These cultivars have the unique ability to flower and fruit from spring to autumn with several peaks throughout the season. In our study, 'Diamante' began to flower earlier than 'Elsinore' (April 14 and April 16, respectively), whereas 'Elsinore' had earlier ripening time (May 13). 'Elsinore' also expressed significantly higher values of all yield components, including the highest average yields per plant and square meter (504 and 3.02 kg, respectively). The mean fruit size ranged from 19.7 g ('Elsinore') to 22.5 g ('Diamante') showing decreasing trend from first to fourth harvest in both cultivars evaluated. 'Diamante' contained abundant quantities of soluble solids, titratable acids and vitamin C as an important attributes of nutritional fruit quality (8.6%, 0.87% and 60.1 mg/100 g FW, respectively). In general, fruiting period/harvest time had a significant effect on yield components, physical and chemical fruit properties where increases in obtained values for productivity, fruit weight and stalk length were apparent in the first two harvests, whereas elevated concentrations of soluble solids and titratable acids were observed during mid-summer and early fall. Vitamin C content was unaffected by harvest time.

AB - The research was designed to evaluate the effect of growth regulator Prohexadione-Ca (ProCa) and young canes removal on the profile and content of individual phenolic compounds contained in the fruit of raspberry cultivar 'Willamette'(Rubus idaeus L.). Studies were conducted in the period of 2010-2011 in a commercial raspberry plantation located in Tolisavac village near Krupanj. The experimental design was completely randomized and examined the influence six treatments, as follows: control - no treatment; 2ProCa - with 2 ProCa applications; R - one removal of young canes; R + 2ProCa - young cane removal with 2 ProCa applications; 2R - two removals of young canes; 2ProCa + 2GA3 ‡ with 2 ProCa applications, and subsequently with gibberellic acid. The first series of young canes were removed for the first time in mid-April and for the second time at the beginning of May. In 2ProCa, Z + 2ProCa and 2ProCa + 2GA3 treatments foliar application of ProCa was carried out twice during the period of April-May in three weeks interval, i.e. when the primocane growth reached 30 cm in height. The following concentrations of ProCa: 125 ppm (first application) and 200 ppm (second application) were applied. The application of gibberellic acid (GA3) was carried out two times shortly after application of Prohexadione-Ca in a concentration of 250 ppm. The most prominent flavonols were quercetin glycosides, whereas cyanidin-3-sophoroside and cyanidin-3-glucoside were predominant anthocyanins detected in raspberry fruit. A very high content of free ellagic acid and its derivate galolil-bis-HHDP-glucose were also detected. Removal of young canes combined with two ProCa applications expressed a positive influence on increasing of quercetin-dihexoside, quercetin-3-vicianoside, quercetin-3-galactoside and free ellagic acid content, as well as anthocyanin's content (cyanidin-3-sophoroside and cyanidin-3-glucoside) in the fruit of 'Willamette' raspberry.

AB - Fruit extracts of two raspberry (Rubus idaeus L) cultivars (Autumn Bliss and Polka) were analysed for total phenolic (TPC) and anthocyanin (TACY) content. Correlation of TPC with total antioxidant capacity (TAC) showed higher free-radical scavenging properties of Autumn Bliss (r(2) = 0.9999) compared to Polka (r(2) = 0.8972). Correlation coefficient between TACY and TAC were higher in Autumn Bliss (r(2) = 0.9939) compared to Polka fruits (r(2) = 0.8419). Although total protein concentrations were similar in both cultivars (similar to 0.35 mg mL(-1)), activities of peroxidases and polyphenol oxidases were much higher in Polka, which were confirmed with isoelectric focusing in cationic (pl 9.3) and anionic (pl 3.6) range. HPLC detection showed that among detected flavonoids (catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, rutin, myricetin, resveratrol, quercetin and kaempferol) epicatechin appears to be the most abundant compound. Chlorogenic, caffeic and p-coumaric acid were also detected. The results indicate that the changes in enzymes activities related to content of substrates play an important role in nutrient quality definition of raspberry fruits.

abstract = "Fruit extracts of two raspberry (Rubus idaeus L) cultivars (Autumn Bliss and Polka) were analysed for total phenolic (TPC) and anthocyanin (TACY) content. The results indicate that the changes in enzymes activities related to content of substrates play an important role in nutrient quality definition of raspberry fruits.",

AB - The research was designed to evaluate the effect of growth regulator Prohexadione-Ca (ProCa) and young canes removal on the changes of photosynthetic pigment content and modification activities of antioxidant enzyme defense system in leaves and fruits of raspberry cultivar 'Willamette' (Rubus idaeus L.). The experiment was performed in the period of 2011-2012. It consisted of five treatments: control - no treatment; 2ProCa - with 2 ProCa applications; Z - one removal of young canes; Z+2ProCa - young canes removal with 2 ProCa applications; 2Z - two removals of young canes. The first series of young canes were removed for the first time in mid-April and for the second time at the begining of May. In 2ProCa and Z+2ProCa treatments foliar application of ProCa was carried out twice during the period of April-May in interval of three weeks, i.e. when the primocane growth reached 30 cm in height. The following concentrations of ProCa: 125 ppm (first application) and 200 ppm (second application) were applied. Significantly higher mean values of chlorophyll b content were registered in the 2ProCa (42.84 μg·g-1 FW) and Z+2ProCa (46.12 μg·g-1 FW) treatment. The highest SOD and POD activities were found in leaves of new young canes which developed after the young canes removal was applied. Z+2ProCa treatment significantly increased CAT activity in raspberry leaves (63.51 U mg-1 prot.). Both of implemented measures, especially applied in combination, resulted in higher activity of CAT, POD and SOD enzymes in the fruits of the examined cultivar.
AB - U radu je proučavan uticaj retardanta rasta Prohexadione-Ca (ProCa) i pomotehničke mere zakidanja prvih serija mladih izdanaka na promene u sadržaju fotosintetskih pigmenata i modifikaciju aktivnosti enzima antioksidacionog zaštitnog sistema u listovima i plodovima sorte maline 'Willamette' (Rubus idaeus L.).

AB - The chemical fruit composition, phenolic profile, and corresponding total antioxidant activity of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and 2 commercial blueberry cultivars (Vaccinium corymbosum) were analyzed. Results from this study showed that cultivar Berkeley yielded the highest glucose and fructose contents (70.8 and 88.8 mg/g FW, respectively), and the sweetness index expressed a similar trend, achieving the highest value for cultivar Berkeley (279.2). Citric acid was the major organic acid in the berries tested. V myrtillus yielded a total organic acids value 2-fold higher (0.35 mg/g FW) as well as the highest vitamin C content (25.8 mg/100 g FW). Among the flavonols measured, myricetin was most abundant in V myrtillus (10.7 mu g/g FW), whereas the highest amounts of kaempferol and quercetin were detected in the blueberry cultivar Bluecrop (4.75 and 9.11 mu g/g FW, respectively). Despite the challenge of characterizing phenolic acids due to the complexity and natural variation in fruit composition, this study confirms that cultivars of V corymbosum are rich sources of chlorogenic acid, particularly cultivar Bluecrop (71.2 mu g/g FW). Nevertheless, total phenolics were higher in V myrtillus than in the cultivated blueberries, and consequently the highest level of total antioxidant capacity was recorded in wild bilberry (6.16 mg asc/g FW). This semicomprehensive study characterizes the fruit quality attributes and illustrates differences in the content of taste- and health-related compounds present in these Vaccinium berries.

AB - Plant growth retardants' applications have a practical use in fruit production, generally resulting in better vegetative growth and cropping level balance. Foliar applications of the gibberellin synthesis inhibitor prohexadione-Ca (ProCa), removal of young canes, and the combination of these treatments were evaluated in the Willamette raspberry (Rubus idaeus L). The experiment consisted of 5 treatments, including 1 untreated control. ProCa was applied during the period of April May, as a foliar spray at active ingredient concentrations of 100 ppm (first application) and 200 ppm (second application) at a 3-week interval, either in treatment with ProCa alone or in combination with young cane removal (R+ProCa). The first series of young primocanes were removed for the first time in mid-April (R and R+ProCa) and for the second time at the beginning of May (2R). Application of a growth retardant resulted in the inhibition of the cane's growth, followed by increasing the number of nodes per meter of cane. Positive effects of ProCa and R+ProCa on the number of fruiting laterals and yields per floricane were found without negative consequences on fruit quality, except for a reduction of total acidity. All treatments increased yield per cane. Total antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, and anthocyanin contents were significantly increased using ProCa.

AB - Six floricane fruiting raspberry cultivars ('Willamette', 'Meeker', 'Malahat', 'Tulameen', 'Chilliwack' and 'Glen Ample') grown at the Experimental Station "Radmilovac", a collective raspberry orchard of the Faculty of Agriculture, Belgrade University were harvested in the period of 2008-2009. All cultivars were evaluated for their standard parameters of productivity (number of fruiting laterals and inflorescences per cane, number of fruits per cane, and both yield per cane and per meter of hedgerow), fruit quality (fruit weight, index of fruit shape, number of drupelets per fruit), and nutritional value (soluble solids content, sugars content, titratable acidity and vitamin C content). The results from this study showed that the earliest ripening time was observed in 'Malahat' (June 5), whereas 'Glen Ample' was the latest (June 15). 'Chilliwack' expressed significantly higher values of all yield components, including the highest yields per cane and meter of hedgerow (1.2 kg and 7.2 kg, respectively). The average fruit size of 'Glen Ample' was significantly higher (4.7 g) than those of the other cultivars tested. 'Willamette' and 'Chilliwack' had the highest contents of soluble solids (11.7%) and also a very high content of vitamin C was found in 'Chilliwack' (52.3 mg/100 g).
