We report the initial results of a study of the Ne I 503.775 nm spectral line profiles in an abnormal Grimm glow discharge of pure neon. The profiles were recorded under same experimental conditions both end-on (i.e. along the discharge axis) and side-on (i.e. in a direction parallel to the cathode surface). We show that Our findings may have a considerable importance for the elemental trace analysis performed with the aid of optical emission spectroscopy of the end-on radiation profiles preventing possible misinterpretation of the profile wavy features as a weak radiation emitted by some elements that are contained in traces in the samples under study.sr
