Acute diseases should be referred to a doctor without delay, but for
milder, non-threatening complaints, herbal medicine can be a satisfactory
answer. By taking a mixture of herbs an illness can be tackled on several
fronts at the same time and, since some herbs act as a catalyst on others,
efficacy is increased. In case of all the needed herbs are not being
available, one can use as many as possible. Herbal mixtures could be
made up and stored, against the time they might be needed.
Coltsfoot, mullein, comfrey, fennel seed and yarrow contain
potassium which sufferers from asthma and hay fever are said to lack.
Tea made from one herb or a combination of some of them can help to
make good the shortage.
Tussilago farfara (coltsfoot). is used for medicinal purposes as
demulcent and expectorant. Tender leaves rich in vitamin C and zink,
are eaten in salads, powdered for herbal tobacco, and treat coughs,
skin ulcers and sores. An old asthma remedy was to throw a quantity
of l...eaves on to a dried wood fire and to inhale the smoke.
Verbascum tapsus (mullein) is used as astringent and demulcent.
The expectorant, soothing, and spasm-sedating properties of the leaf and
flowers are used to treat raspy coughs, and in herbal tobacco. Symphytum
officinale (comfrey) contains potassium, calcium and phosphorous and
allantoin which speeds cell renewal in damaged muscles and broken
bones. For medicinal purposes it is used as demulcent, astringent,
pectoral, styptic and vulnerary. All parts of Foeniculum vulgare var.
dulce (Florence Fennel) have a fresh aniseed flavor. It is used as
carminative, stimulant and stomachic. Aromatic seeds could also be
chewed to sweeten breath and allay hunger and ease indigestion. The flowering tops of Achillea millefolium (yarrow) are digestive and
