AB - We present the results of the optical emission spectroscopy study of the Ar I 517.753 nm spectral line, observed at different positions in the cathode sheath of an abnormal DC Grimm-type glow discharge source operated in argon. The line profiles were recorded parallel to the cathode surface (side-on view), along the discharge axis from the cathode towards the negative glow. The spectra show a red line shift, which diminishes with the distance from the cathode surface and decreasing electric field. This allows experimental determination of the coefficient C in quadratic relation, Δν = CE2, between the wavenumber Stark shifts, Δν, and electric field strength, E. The above relation is a low-field (up to 25 kV/cm) approximation of the quadratic dependence of the upper-level shift, measured for a large set of argon lines at high electric fields (up to 700 kV/cm) by Windholz (Phys Scr 21:67–74, 1980). One of these lines, Ar I 537.349 nm, is used here for independent measurement of the electric field E and correlated with the Ar I 517.753 nm upper-level wavenumber shift Δν to obtain a line-specific coefficient C. In this way, the Ar I 517.753 nm spectral line complements the set of argon lines suitable for Stark spectroscopy diagnostics of the electric field distribution and cathode sheath length, the knowledge of which allows for a better understanding and description of the glow discharge processes through various theoretical models. AB - We report a study of the cathode sheath (CS) space of the argon glow discharges in the abnormal DC regime by means of the iterative kinetic model. By matching the model shapes of the side-on spectra with the experimental data for the Ar II 460.954 nm line obtained via optical emission spectroscopy, we have estimated the thickness of the CS space and the distributions of the electric field strength and gas temperature over the entire CS space of discharge. AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300°C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated using commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles supported on natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Cli). Employing ultrasound assisted solid-state dispersion method hybrid photocatalyst containing 20 wt% of TiO2, marked TCli-20, was prepared. The structural, morphological and surface properties, and particle size distribution of TCli-20 were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Brunner-Emmet-Teller method and laser diffraction. The results revealed a successful loading of TiO2 P25 nanoparticles on Cli surface and the preservation of both zeolitic structure and optical properties of TiO2. The influence of catalyst dose, pH value and the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was evaluated. The optimal reaction conditions were 2 g/L of catalyst at near-neutral conditions (pH = 6.4) for complete BPA (5 mg/L) photodegradation after 180 min of exposure to simulated solar light. The addition of H2O2 was beneficial for the degradation process and led to the removal of BPA after 120 min of irradiation. BPA removal (60% for 180 min of irradiation) was reduced when TCli-20 was tested in bottled drinking water due to the presence of bicarbonate ions which acted as scavengers for hydroxyl radicals. Even though the photocatalytic activity of TCli-20 decreased after several cycles of usage, 70% of BPA was still successfully degraded during the fourth cycle. The reusability study showed easy separation, stability and good photocatalytic ability of investigated cost-effective hybrid photocatalyst. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. There is a need to find an alternative to expensive and unavailable platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. This study aimed to reduce the cost of PGM materials by replacing Ru with RuO2 and lowering the amount of RuO2 by adding abundant and multifunctional ZnO. A ZnO@RuO2 composite in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized by microwave processing of a precipitate as a green, low-cost, and fast method, and then annealed at 300°C and 600°C to improve the catalytic properties. The physicochemical properties of the ZnO@RuO2 composites were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The electrochemical activity of the samples was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. We observed good bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composites toward HER and OER in both electrolytes. The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions. abstract = "Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. AB - We present a series of optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurements of the stable correlation in characteristic features of spectral line shapes of neutral neon and argon, recorded in the Grimm-type plane cathode DC glow discharge (GD) source from two positions: (1) perpendicular to the cathode surface from the end of the discharge, in line with the discharge axis (end-on view) and (2) side-on cathode view, parallel to the cathode surface and perpendicular to the discharge axis, at the position of the maximum external electric field Fmax in the cathode sheath (CS), close to the cathode surface. Side-on view recording enables spatially resolved OES in the CS, where the Stark effect decisively determines the splitting and shifting of line components relative to the unshifted zero-field line. On the other hand, commonly available end-on view spectra recording in standard analytical Grimm-type sources collects integral light emission from the different layers of the discharge, both CS and negative glow (NG). However, distinct Stark components of several Ne I and Ar I lines' splitting and shifting in the CS are preserved as characteristic excessive wings broadening features in the end-on recordings as well. Following spectral measurements of six Ne I and four Ar I lines in a broad range of discharge conditions (pressure, voltage, current) and cathode materials, we report on a sustained correlation coefficient of 1.083 in neon and 1.129 in argon between the side-on recorded components shift Δλs at the position of maximum field Fmax in the CS, and the end-on recorded wings broadening characteristic features shift Δλe. Individual Ne I and Ar I lines' correlation coefficients Δλs/Δλe are reported also. These coefficients can be used to estimate the maximum CS electric field Fmax and the CS thickness dc within reasonable margins of uncertainty in a standard analytical Grimm-type GD source with an end-on view available only.

AB - Abstract: Nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of β-diketonato complexes of nickel(II) and iron(III). The mechano-chemical activation of the complex precursors was used to ensure the increase in the reaction activity and consequently reduce thermal decomposition temperature. The prepared sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR confirmed the spinel phase of the investigated powder. SEM and TEM revealed the ultrafine nature of nanosized polygonal particles, with a pronounced agglomeration effect. The capacity for electrocatalytic applications was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrocatalytic measurements pointed out that the addition of 5% of nickel ferrite as a modifier to carbon paste electrode caused a current increase and a decrease of the EIS semicircle. Further increase in the amount of the modifier decreased heterogeneity of the electrode surface and served as excellent sensor for the detection of gallic acid in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with the detection limit of 0.27 µM. This unambiguously indicated the significant improvement in electrode transfer rate and better characteristics of the diffusion layer. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - We report results of an experimental and theoretical study of complex UV line shapes of Ne II 369.421 nm, Ne II 370.962 nm, Ne II 371.308 nm, and. Ne II 372.711 nm lines in the cathode sheath (CS) region of an abnormal DC glow discharge in pure neon. Two sets of experimental profiles and electric field distributions, one for discharge with tungsten and the other with titanium cathode, were obtained by means of the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and theoretically studied by the iterative CS kinetic model. It is shown that our theoretical model enables the determination of the most important CS parameters (e.g. the thickness of the CS region, and the theoretical distributions of electric field and gas temperature) and thereupon based accurate theoretical predictions of the experimentally observed profiles of the studied lines.
