AB - The parasitoid species Ephedrus plagiator (Nees, 1811) (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae) is one of the most important biological agents against pest aphids. We investigated whether this species was in competition with some other aphidiine species for the same hosts. We thus examined its potential in biological programs to control aphids. We applied an unsupervised artificial neural network, a self-organizing map (SOM), which classified the competitive parasitoids into seven groups. The SOM also visualized the distributional pattern of 31 parasitoid wasps along the neural network, revealing their competitive ability in relation to E. plagiator. Indicator value (IndVal) analysis quantified the competitive ability and showed that the most competitive species with regard to E. plagiator were Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson, 1880), L. fabarum (Marshall 1896), L. cardui (Marshall 1896) and Binodoxys angelicae (Haliday, 1833). These species appeared in four different SOM groups and mostly parasitized the Aphis fabae Scopoli, 1763 (Hemiptera: Aphididae) host.

AB - Aphids represent one of the most significant pest species in agroecosystems. In this study we investigated aphid diversity in Southeastern Serbia. We recorded 132 species, mostly infesting host plants from the families Asteraceae and Rosaceae. The most diverse genus was Aphis Linnaeus with 34 species. Within this genus, the most frequently sampled species was A. fabae Scopoli. Genera Uroleucon Mordvilko, Brachycaudus van der Goot and Dysaphis Börner were also represented by a large number of species.

AB - Fauna of aphidiine parasitic wasps has been intensively studied in the past 20 years in Serbia. Lysiphlebus testaceipes, a species introduced originally to France, has become broadly established in the Mediterranean area. Also, it has recently been categorized as an invasive species, It was found in the Nigka kotlina valley and in a small gorge, the Sit'evo gorge, both in southeast Serbia and under the influence of the Mediterranean climate. Twenty one trophic associations of L. testaceipes on 17 plant species and 16 aphid hosts have been identified.

AB - We report the occurrence of Lysiphlebus orientalis in Serbia, an aphid parasitoid from the Far East that is new to Europe and has the potential to become invasive. Our finding based on morphological characters is confirmed by analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences. An increase in number and an expansion of the host range were observed during field studies over the past two years, and it is determined that the current host range encompasses nine aphid hosts on 12 different host plants, forming 13 tri-trophic associations. A host range determined for European populations of L. orientalis appears wider compared with that in its Far Eastern native habitats where Aphis glycines Mats. is the sole known host. Moreover, it overlaps considerably with the host ranges of European parasitoids that play an important role in the natural control of pest aphids.

AB - Distribution of Thremma anomalum was well documented by the late 1980s. How ever, macrozoobenthos research within Serbian watercourses between 1989 and 2010 reveal a shift of the western boundary of the distribution. Recent research in western Serbia and northern Montenegro has shown no trace of this species, in spite of its previous presence. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the species was found in only one of ten former localities, implying that the species might entirely vanish from zoographic region 5 in the near future. On the other hand, the species was found at 17 localities in eastern, southeastern and southern Serbia, sections of the area where the species was not recorded earlier. This research has shown that T. anomalum is not restricted to cold waters and builds specific biocenoses characterized by dominance of Trichoptera and Gammaridae.

AB - This study brings a list of original data of parasitic wasps from the subfamily Aphidiinae collected on the territory of Serbia and Montenegro associated with their aphid hosts and plants. Twenty-three genera and 122 species of Aphidiinae were identified from 204 aphid taxa occurring on 344 plant taxa. A total number of 794 parasitoid-aphid-plant associations is reported and presented alphabetically according to parasitoids classified in four tribes.

AB - Sampling of aphids and parasitoids was conducted in diverse cereal and vegetable crop habitats in Slovenia in the period from 2006 to 2010. Over 330 samples containing primary or secondary parasitoids or both were taken. In 25 different vegetable crops 15 species of aphids parasitized by 18 species of primary parasitoids were found, and were associated with 13 species of secondary or hyperparasitoids. Eight species of primary parasitoids emerged from mummies of three species of cereal aphids. Aphidius ervi Haliday, A. rhopalosiphi de Stefani-Perez, A. uzbekistanicus Luzhetski, and Ephedrus plagiator (Nees), are generally present in cereal crops and most abundant primary parasitoids in cereal crops in Slovenia. Nine species of hyperparasitoids were found both in cereal and vegetable crops, while four species, i.e. Alloxysta fulviceps Curtis, Coruna clavata Walker, Dendrocerus laticeps Hedicke and Pachyneuron formosum Walker, were found only in vegetable crops and two, Alloxysta brachyptera Hartig and Phaenoglyphis villosa Hartig, only in cereal. 30% of all hyperparasitoid species belonged to genus Alloxysta. Cereal and vegetable crops reveal a relatively diverse aphid parasitoid fauna that corresponds to diverse habitat, landscape and vegetation complexity in Slovenia.
