AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800o C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - BZT ceramics was prepared by using fine powder mixture of BaCO3, TiO2 and ZrO2 in the respective molar ratio to form Ba(Zr0.10Ti0.90)O3 via solid state reaction at elevated temperature. The prepared BZT was milled in the planetary ball mill from 0-120 min to achieve different powder grades from micron to nano-sized particles. After the powder characterization by XRD and SEM the samples were pressed in disc shape and sintered at different temperatures from 1100-1350°C in the air. The sintered samples were characterized by SEM and their density and average grain size was determined and presented vs. sintering temperature and powder grades (milling time). After that the silver epoxy electrodes were deposited on sintered disc samples. The disc samples capacity and resistivity were measured at low frequency region from 1 Hz to 200 kHz using low frequency impedance analyzer. The sintering temperatures and powder grades were used as parameters. Finally the specific resistance ρ, dielectric constant (ε' + jε") and tgδ where determined from the impedance measurements. The behavior of electronic properties where analyzed e.g. the relaxation effect of the space charge (inter-granular electric charges) vs. sintering temperature and ceramic grades. The results obtained were compared with best literature data for the losses in BZT ceramics at low frequencies.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - Industrial/technological growth is directly connected with environmental pollution, but its influence can be minimized through pollution abatement approaches such as the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this study, novel porous amine-functionalized silicate minerals, specifically, cordierite was investigated for the removal of toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters. Cordierite supports were synthesized by mixing MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 powders in 2:2:5 molar ratios, and mechanically activated via ball milling in ethanol for 10, 40, or 80 min. Pellets were sintered by heating in air at 20 degrees C min(-1) to 1,350 degrees C, for 2 h. Porous supports were produced by coarsely crushing the sintered pellets and mixing the crushed and sieved cordierite powder with 20 wt.% of a pore-forming agent, either nanocellulose or yeast. The resulting pellets were sintered by heating at 5 degrees C min(-1) to 700 degrees C in air. The synthetic cordierite support was modified by treatment in poly-ethylenimine. Activated supports were then tested for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions. The phase composition of the cordierite supports was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 43 mg g(-1) for Ni2+. This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metal removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid functionalized cordierite-based ceramic.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100–1400 °C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 °C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

abstract = "Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.",

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid-state reaction between MgO and a-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation was used to increase the reactivity of powders and decrease the sintering temperatures. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The resulting powders were characterized to determine the effect of activation on surface area, particle size, and crystallinity. Mechanical activation decreased particle size, increased surface area, and increased the width of peaks in x-ray diffraction. Dilatometry was used to monitor densification behavior up to 1500 °C. For non-activated powders, sintering started at approximately 1400 °C, while for activated powders, the onset temperature decreased to about 1340 °C. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behaviour of MgAl2O4 produced from mixed oxide powders.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetry (TG) were used to determine the temperatures for synthesis reactions and phase transformations. Based on the DTA results, several different processes occured during heating, including evaporation of physisorbed water, decomposition of Mg(OH)2, and spinel formation. With mechanical activation, all characteristic temperatures shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is one of the most exploited materials in ceramic industry due to its good physico-chemical properties, mechanical properties, and, importantly, due to its low cost. Advantageous properties, such as hardness, dielectric and thermal properties, and refractoriness, open the door to a wide range of applications of corundum. Porous alumina ceramics is often used for filters and as a catalytic substrate, whereas dense alumina ceramics is frequently used in automotive and aerospace industry. Hence, there is a great interest in exploring this type of ceramics. The aim of this work is to explain the influence of preparation parameters (mechanical activation, addition of transition metal oxides, and sintering conditions) on the final electrical and mechanical properties of alumina.
As a starting powder, a mix of a few alumina modifications (α-, κ-,γ - Al2O3) was used. It was doped with 1 wt % of Mn2O3, Cr2O3, and NiO, respectively. Three of the obtained mixtures were homogenized and three were ball milled for 60 min. Particle size analysis, SEM, and EDS were performed in order to demonstrate changes in the microstructure after milling. DTA/TG analyses were used to determine all characteristic temperatures. After sintering at 1400 oC in an air atmosphere, mechanical, electrical, and physico-chemical properties of the obtained ceramics were determined.
Results showed that the mechanical treatment lead to a decrease in temperatures of phase transitions and sintering for approximately 100 oC. Incorporation of cations of transition metals into the crystal lattice of alumina was noticed. Activated and sintered samples showed a higher tensile strength and higher relative dielectric permittivity then the sample doped with Cr2O3.
The main conclusion of this investigation is that the mechanical activation has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures of all detected phase transitions and sintering processes. Using a mixture of several crystalline phases of alumina as a starting powder alleviates the incorporation of transition-metal cations into the alumina crystal lattice, leading to changes in microstructures of the prepared ceramics. Finally, changes in the microstructure and lattice disordering have the dominant influence on the final mechanical properties.

abstract = "Corundum (alpha-alumina) is one of the most exploited materials in ceramic industry due to its good physico-chemical properties, mechanical properties, and, importantly, due to its low cost.
Finally, changes in the microstructure and lattice disordering have the dominant influence on the final mechanical properties.",

AB - Single crystalline phase MgAl2O4 is made from the predetermined composition of MgO-Al2O3 powder mixture by using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 are treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, in air. The aim of this experiment was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of all sintered samples and to find out which sample has the best features for further use. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 °C, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. The results show that mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens. With the prolonged milling time, densities increased, reaching the maximum value of 2.8 g/cm3 for sample activated 120 minutes.

AB - Recently, with the huge use of smart gadgets, developing of smart jewelry represents a very interesting segment in material science, as well as in electronic science. Alumina is widely used ceramic in many industrial fields as pigments, catalysis, microelectronics, etc., mostly because of its low cost and appropriate mechanical and electrical properties, high surface area and thermal stability. Also, modified alumina could be applied in production of smart jewelry. Thus, the main objectives of this investigation is to improve features of sintered alumina doped with Mn2O3 along with mechanical treatment, in order to obtain strong ceramic with low values of dielectric loss and low relative dielectric permittivity, as well as esthetic. Commercial alumina powder was doped with 1 wt % of manganese oxide and treated in planetary ball mill for an hour. Characteristic temperatures of both powders (non-activated and activated one) were investigated in detail by DTA and TG analyses. After sintering at 1200, 1300, and 1400 oC for 2 h, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. Furthermore, mechanical and electrical properties were examined for all sintered samples.

AB - This study presents the synthesis of porous cordierite- based ceramics and its surface activation by polyethylenimine/nano-CeO2 for the heavy metal removal. The synthesis was carried out by the addition of following powders: MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 in 2:2:5 molar ratios, respectively. The oxide(s) mixture was further processed in two sequential stages: i) ball milled in the ethanol for 40 minutes and palletized under the pressure of 3 t/cm2, as a pre-sintering process, and ii) the pallets were further sintered for 2h in the air atmosphere at 1350 oC, under a heating rate of 20 oC/min. The sintered mineral composite was crashed and sieved, and mixed with 20 wt % of nanocellulose, as a pore forming agent. Nanocellulose mixture was pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, under a heating rate of 5 oC/ min. The obtained synthetic cordierite was further tested as the adsorbent activated by polyethylenimine/ nano-CeO2 for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ -ions. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics models, and thermodynamic parameters were also analyzed, manifesting that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The phase composition of the pristine and activated cordierite was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metals removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid (nano)synthesized material.

AB - In this study, sintering of two systems was investigated in parallel, pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with addition of 5 mass % TeO2. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated for 0, 10 and 40minutes by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa followed by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) at 1000 MPa. The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at a temperature of 1350 oC for 1 h, with 10 oC/min heating rate. Densities over 96 % of theoretical values were obtained for samples activated for 40 minutes. XRD measurements of MAS-40 sintered sample pointed at a mixture that consisted of several phases, majority of cordierite (> 73 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 22 %), ZrSiO4 (2.5 %), and Al2O3 (1.8%), while XRD pattern of MAS-40-TeO2 contained majority of cordierite (> 72 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 23 %), ZrSiO4 (1.9 %), and Al2O3 (1.9 %). The relative permittivities of the samples were measured in an open test fixture. The results for the real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples, measured at 200 MHz, are shown in Table I. The loss tangent for all samples was very small, below the resolution of the measurement setup (0.005).
There is a strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density, which agrees with our previous results.

abstract = "In this study, sintering of two systems was investigated in parallel, pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with addition of 5 mass % TeO2.
There is a strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density, which agrees with our previous results.",

AB - We present an overview of electromagnetic numerical techniques and measurement apparatus that have been used for assessing electrical properties of ceramic samples. The complex permittivity of the ceramics is typically the first electromagnetic property of interest. In the measurement approach that we use, ceramic samples, in the shape of pills with metalized faces, are placed in either a proprietary coaxial chamber or in an open fixture. The scattering parameter (reflection coefficient) is measured using a network analyzer. For the deembedding of the complex permittivity of a sample one needs precise electromagnetic simulations, including detailed models of the chamber or the open fixture. For lower and intermediate frequencies we use a numerical technique for electrostatic analysis, based on the method of moments with Galerkin testing. We create a database that is used afterwards for evaluation of the complex permittivity practically in real time. For higher frequencies, a full electrodynamic model of the chamber is developed with WIPL-D software. For all our deembedding techniques, we have also developed a detailed model of losses in the SMA coaxial connectors, which is essential for a precise evaluation of the imaginary part of the complex permittivity for low-loss dielectrics. We present results of several measurements in order to illustrate the used techniques.

AB - In this study, porous cordierite-based ceramics was synthesized. In the first step, MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 (all Aldrich, p.a.) were used. MgO and Al2O3 powders were calcined at 1000 oC for 2 h, in order to avoid hydroxides. They were mixed in 2:2:5 molar ratio, in order to form cordierite, Mg2Al4Si5O18. Ethanol was added to the mixture, and then milled in a Fritsch Pulverisette planetary mill, with 300 rpm, in air atmosfere. Times of activation were 0, 10, 40, and 80 min, while balls and vessels were made from ZrO2, and powder to balls mass ratio was 40:1. After milling, powders were dried, and then pressed under 3 t/cm2. Pallets with 8 mm radius were sintered in air at 1350 oC, for 2 h, heating rate was 20 oC/min. Sintered samples were crashed and sieved. In the secons step, the as-prepared cordierite was mixed with 20 wt.% yeast (0.1 g yeast + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). The other mixture was with 20 wt.% nanocellulose (0.1 g NC + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). Both mixtures were pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, with 5 oC/min heating rate, in air atmosfere. During the second sintering regime, porous cordierite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Cordierite was the most abundant phase in all sintered samples. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - In this study, highly porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 oC for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, sintering regime was set up. Prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 oC. During the sintering regime, highly porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - Porous wollastonite (WL) based adsorbents were fabricated by a pressureless sintering process by using low molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), nanocellulose (NC) and yeast as the pore forming agents. WL based adsorbents were synthesized in two step process. In the first step, calcium carbonate and methylhidrogen cyclosiloxane were mixed with isopropyl alcohol, dried and calcined at 250 °C. Second step included WL mixing with porogen, followed by controlled calcination and on that way the sintered materials with randomly distributed pores were obtained. The effectiveness of the synthesis steps as well as material properties, i.e., the pore morphology were determined by FTIR analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The pore morphology and adsorption capacity was changed dramatically by changing the pore forming agent. The highest adsorption capacity was obtained when NC was used as the pore forming agent. Obtained materials showed moderate adsorption capacities of 10.56, 8.42 and 11.33 mg/g with respect to As5+, Cr6+ and phosphate, respectively. The con centrations of heavy metal ions were determined by using Ion chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no added additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

abstract = "Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.",

AB - The authors investigated the morphological characteristics of mechanically activated ZnO powder. ZnO powder was mechanically activated for 2, 5, 10 and 30 minutes in a planetary ball mill. Mechanical activation introduces lattice disorder and defects into ZnO hexagonal wurtzite structure. In order to determine specific surface area and pore volume, we performed N2 porosimetry and SEM in order to investigate the microstructure of non-activated and mechanically activated ZnO powders. Using Kubelka-Munk function, UV-Vis spectra showed the reducing in band gap with activation time. ZnO powder activated for 5 minutes has the narrowest band gap.

AB - In this article the influence of ball miling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system was investigated. The mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time period from 0 to 120 minutes. The influence of mechanical activation on the lattice vibrational spectra was studied by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. Structural investigations have been performed on produced powders. Nitrogen adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results have been obtained: specific surface area continuously decreased up to 40 minutes of activation and increased after that, reaching its minimun value of 5.5 m2/g. The Raman spectra of activated powders have shown that anatase modes have been decreasing in intensity and broadening as the time of activation extended. Also, the additional modes attributed to TiO2 II, srilankite and rutile phases started to appear as a consequence of activation.
