AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films are made with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M), (b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-M-Cl). Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for 49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybrid films, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition. POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparing to pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for composite with POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the composite films indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcing of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - Unsaturated fatty acid (FA)-modified nanocellulose (m-NC) shows potential application in improving mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/m-NC nanocomposites (UPe/m-NC). A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m-NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross-linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox-Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross-linking capabilities on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m-NC is studied. Cross-linking density, modulus, and T-g of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - Lead granules synthesized by the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy technique. Effect of the different parameters of electrolysis, such as solution composition, overpotential of electrodeposition, and quantity of the electricity, on lead granular growth has been systematically investigated. Aside from the electrochemical aspects of lead granular growth, crystallographic aspects of the obtained granules were also analyzed. In the dependence of the electrodeposition conditions, granules of various shapes were obtained. The granules, such as octahedrons and hexagons, as well as many various types of twinned particles: single-twinned, multiply-twinned, lamellar-twinned, and many other complicated shapes denoted as polyparticles, were synthesized through regulation of the parameters of electrolysis. Increasing both the concentration of Pb2+ ions and overpotential of the electrodeposition favored the formation of more complicated forms. Formation of granules of specified crystallographic characteristics was also correlated with the basic principle of metal electrocrystallization.

AB - Electrodeposition of lead from the concentrated nitrate electrolyte in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis has been investigated by the analysis of the potentiostatic current transients and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the process of Pb nucleation from the concentrated electrolyte follows Scharifker model based on the 3D (three-dimensional) instantaneous nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth. The deviations of the obtained dependencies from the theoretical prediction for this model have been also discussed. Needle-like and fern-like dendrites, as well as crystals of irregular shape (precursors of dendrites) were formed in the diffusion controlled electrodeposition. The SEM analysis of these dendritic forms revealed their 2D (two-dimensional) growth. The size of needle-like dendrites was considerably larger than the size of both the fern-like dendrites and the irregular crystals. Although the electrodeposition process occurred inside the linear diffusion layer of the macroelectrode, the shape and size of dendrites were determined by the effect of local diffusion fields formed around tips (spherical diffusion) and top edges (cylindrical diffusion) of protrusions formed in the initial stage of the electrodeposition. The growth rates under the conditions of spherical and cylindrical diffusion control were mutually compared and a faster growth under the conditions of the spherical, in relation to the cylindrical diffusion, was proved. The effect of the current density distribution on formation of the final forms of Pb dendrites was also discussed.

abstract = "Electrodeposition of lead from the concentrated nitrate electrolyte in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis has been investigated by the analysis of the potentiostatic current transients and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of the current density distribution on formation of the final forms of Pb dendrites was also discussed.",
