AB  - A new species of plant mite (Acari: Eriophyidae) was discovered on medusahead (Taeniatherum caputmedusae), an annual grass that is native to central Asia and the Mediterranean Basin. It is invasive in western North America. Aculodes altamurgiensis sp. nov., is described here and differentiated from other Aculodes spp., on the basis of morphology. Its DNA fingerprinting was reported and compared with Aculodes mckenziei collected from Elymus repens and Bromus inermis. Pairwise comparison of MT-001 sequences between A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., and A. mckenziei revealed 20.2-21.5% genetic divergence between these congeneric species. First collected in Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia in Apulia, Italy in 2014,A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., has been subsequently collected from medusahead in Serbia, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. Based on these data and on preliminary observations on the effects of the mite on plant growth, A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., is currently being investigated as a candidate biological control agent of medusahead.

AB  - A new species of eriophyoid mite, Metaculus diplotaxi n. sp. inhabiting Diplotaxis tenuifolia ( L.) DC., is described from Serbia. To investigate interspecific variability between Metaculus spp. on three different Brassicaceae host plants ( viz. D. tenuifolia, Lepidium latifolium ( L.), Isatis tinctoria ( L.)), we analyzed phenotypic variability of morphological traits and molecular sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I ( MT- CO1). Discriminant analysis identified seven traits that significantly differentiate three Metaculus spp: M. lepidifolii, M. rapistri, and M. diplotaxi n. sp. Analysis of MT- CO1 sequences supported the results obtained from the analysis of morphometric features.

AB  - A new eriophyoid mite species, Aculops orlovacae n. sp. (Acari: Prostigmata: Eriophyidae) collected from Dipsacus laciniatus L. (Dipsacaceae) in northern Serbia, is described and illustrated, including digital micrographs depicting key morphological characters. Differential diagnosis is provided in comparison with Aculops salixis Xue, Song et Hong, Aculops rhodensis (Keifer), Aculops hussongi Keifer and Aculops oblongus (Nalepa). This is the first eriophyoid mite species in the genus Aculops described from a host plant in the family Dipsacaceae and it is only the second eriophyoid known from a host species in the genus Dipsacus L. This mite was found during surveys for natural enemies of Dipsacus spp., as part of a classical biological control program.

AB  - The present study describes micro-morphological and histological changes to rosette leaves of the native Eurasian plant species Dipsacus laciniatus (Dipsacaceae) provoked by infestation of the eriophyid mite Leipothrix dipsacivagus Petanovic et Rector. Conspicuous injuries to the leaf tissue were induced by mites feeding on leaves of D. laciniatus rosettes that were propagated from seed under laboratory conditions. Anatomical injuries extended into epidermal cells on the upper and lower leaf surface as well as to the mesophyll layer of infested D. laciniatus leaves. Statistical analysis (by ANOVA and MANOVA) showed significant differences between control and infested plants, particularly in total leaf thickness. The most striking change observed was the decrease in thickness of infested leaves, beginning from the 8th week, associated with the progressive replacement of epidermal cells with an acellular layer. Measures of mite density on test leaves indicated that mites vacated leaves as russeting symptoms intensified. They also appeared to vacate all leaves, whether symptomatic or not, after populations peaked 10-12 weeks after infestation. Comparisons were made between these studies and those on naturally infested, field-collected D. laciniatus plants, as well as with similar studies of other mite-plant interactions.

AB  - The eriophyid mite Leipothrix dipsacivagus Petanovic et Rector provokes severe malformations to its host plant, cut-leaf teasel (Dipsacus laciniatus L.), in the field. These injuries were examined at the morpho-anatomical level in infested plants collected in the field and experimentally infested plants kept under controlled laboratory conditions. A number of symptoms were observed including reduced growth, internode shortening, leaf rolling and wrinkling, and shrunken inflorescences. After severe attack, the leaves of bolted plants became chlorotic with necrotic spots and started to wilt. Young rosettes died. Morphometric analysis revealed significant differences between infested and healthy field-collected bolting plants. Infested plants were significantly shorter than healthy plants, with smaller leaves and flower heads. Striking injuries were also observed on young leaves of experimentally infested plants. It is expected that further investigations will elucidate the full extent of the damage to aboveground parts of D. laciniatus due to infestation by L. dipsacivagus.

AB  - A new species of eriophyid mite, Leipothrix dipsacivagus n. sp. (Acaii: Prostigmata: Eriophyidae), collected from Dipsacus laciniatus L. (Dipsacaceae) and Dipsacusfullonuin L. in Serbia, Bulgaria, and France, is described and illustrated. Differential diagnosis is provided in comparison with Leipothrix knautiae (Liro) n. comb., and Leipothrix succisae (Roivaineii) n. comb., two species that also are proposed here for reassignment from the genus Epitrimerus Nalepa to the genus Leipothrix Keifer, within the family Eriophyidae. L. dipsacivagus n. sp. is being investigated as a candidate for biological control of invasive Dipsacus spp. in the United States.
